Banking and money admin in the Netherlands: a South African arrival guide

Banking and money admin in the Netherlands: a South African arrival guide - WBForex South African Expat Guide
In brief (TL;DR): The Dutch money-admin sequence has one golden rule: the BSN comes first. Full accounts at the major Dutch banks generally require your citizen service number and proof of a Dutch address, both of which flow from registering with your municipality - so your registration appointment matters more than your bank appointment. Many South Africans bridge the gap with a bunq account opened quickly on arrival, receive their first rand-to-euro transfer there, and open with ING, Rabobank or ABN AMRO once registered. Plan the sequence before you fly and your first month runs smoothly; discover it on arrival and everything queues behind one appointment.

The appointment that unlocks everything

Ask any South African family who has made the Dutch move what they wish they had known, and the same answer keeps coming back: how much depends on one piece of admin. Registering with your municipality is what produces your BSN - the citizen service number that Dutch life runs on - and the proof of address that follows it. Employers want it. Health insurance wants it. And, most relevantly here, the major banks generally want it before they will open a full account.

So the first practical step of your Dutch financial life happens at the gemeente, not the bank. Book the registration appointment as early as you possibly can - in the busy cities the wait for an appointment can be the longest single delay in your entire arrival - and treat everything else as downstream of it.

You will need somewhere to receive money before the full-account paperwork completes, and this is where the bridge account earns its place. Many of our clients open with the digital provider bunq soon after arrival - the opening process is quick, and it gives you a working Dutch IBAN early. That IBAN can receive your first transfer from South Africa: your landing money, the deposit, the buffer that turns a stressful first month into a manageable one.

Then, once your BSN and proof of address are in hand, most families open with one of the majors - ING, Rabobank and ABN AMRO are the ones we see most among our clients - and shift their main banking there, keeping or closing the bridge account as suits them. There is no wrong answer on which major; what matters is that whichever account will receive a significant transfer is fully verified and operational before the money is ready to move. An account stuck mid-verification is the most common avoidable delay we see on any corridor, and it is entirely preventable with sequencing.

Your first transfer from South Africa

The mechanics are simpler than most arrivals expect. Transfers run bank to bank over the SWIFT network into your Dutch IBAN, converted from rand at bank-beating rates with a flat R250 SWIFT fee per transfer, irrespective of the amount - these are the same euro rails WBForex runs daily into the EU through the Ireland corridor. On the allowance side, the Single Discretionary Allowance covers up to R2 million per calendar year per adult with no prior SARS approval - doubled from R1 million in the 2026 Budget announced on 25 February 2026 - which comfortably covers most families' landing costs, and a couple has R4 million between them before anyone needs the R10 million Foreign Investment Allowance and its SARS Approval for International Transfer (AIT). Learn more in our allowances guide.

A gentle practical tip from watching many families do this: do not move everything in one anxious lump on day three. Move what the first months genuinely need, get your banking properly established, and let the rest follow in a planned way - your allowances are annual, they reset on 1 January, and a thought-through sequence beats a rushed one every time. (That is planning admin, not market advice - nobody here predicts exchange rates, ever.)

A few adjacent things worth having on the same checklist, because they all interlock with your money admin. Dutch health insurance is compulsory and premiums collect from your Dutch account, so it slots in once banking is live. If you are employed, payroll needs your BSN and your IBAN - another reason the registration appointment leads. And if your employer has mentioned the special expat tax facility commonly known as the 30% ruling: it is a Dutch matter between you, your employer and a Dutch adviser, its rules and rates have been revised repeatedly in recent years, and - a point South Africans specifically need - it has no effect whatsoever on your South African tax status. Your SARS position changes only through formal cessation of SA tax residency, which is a separate decision for a settled day, not arrival week. Read more in our tax emigration guide.

Keeping the South African side tidy

Two things are worth deciding deliberately rather than by default. First, your South African bank account: if you may one day receive an inheritance or encash a retirement fund, those proceeds must pay into a SA account in your own name before they can leave the country - so think twice before closing everything in the farewell rush; a dormant account, or knowing that a non-resident account can be opened later, keeps the door open. Second, anything recurring - rent from a SA property, a policy paying out, family support flowing either direction - can be set up as a planned arrangement rather than an ad-hoc scramble each month, with the Balance of Payments reporting that South African exchange control requires handled for you on every transfer.

Book the municipal registration before you fly, or the moment you land. Open the bridge account (bunq for many) on arrival and receive your landing transfer there. Registration appointment: BSN and address proof in hand. Open with a major (ING, Rabobank or ABN AMRO), verify fully, and shift your main banking across. Health insurance, payroll details, recurring transfers - all slot in behind. And leave the deeper South African decisions - cessation of tax residency, the retirement annuity, what to do with the SA account - for the settled conversation a few months in, when the boxes are unpacked and the decisions can be made properly. We are on WhatsApp for both halves of the move.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a Dutch bank account before I arrive?

Full accounts at the majors generally need your BSN and a Dutch address, which follow from registration after arrival. The practical pre-arrival step is planning: book the registration appointment early and know which bridge account you will open in week one.

How much money should I bring for landing costs?

Every family differs, but the pattern we see is deposits, furniture, transport and a few months' buffer - comfortably within the R2 million per-adult SDA for almost everyone. Move what the first phase needs and plan the rest; the allowance resets each calendar year.

Is bunq safe for receiving a large transfer?

bunq is a licensed Dutch bank and receives SWIFT transfers to its IBANs like any other. For very large amounts, many clients prefer to wait until their account with a major is verified - the right answer is whichever account is fully operational when your money is ready.

Does the 30% ruling change what I can transfer from South Africa?

A: No. Your SA allowances - the R2 million SDA and R10 million FIA - are set by South African rules and are unaffected by any Dutch tax arrangement. The two systems are separate.
